The fur of the New Zealand possum is popular worldwide due to its incredibly soft, luxurious dense pile, providing optimum warmth - it is the world's third warmest natural fur after the arctic fox and polar bear!!. Each hair is hollow which helps the 30mm - 40mm long fur retain warmth. They are incredibly smooth and silky to the touch, qualities they share with mink and fox fur.
The New Zealand Brushtail Possum was originally introduced to New Zealand in the 19th Century but it quickly become a pest and has caused a major environmental headache, killing native trees by stripping them of leaves and bark and birds through eating eggs and competing for food. Recent statistics suggest that the possum population is currently at circa 70-80 million in New Zealand and their consumption of vegetation is in the region of 8 million tonnes per annum.
Woolshed Designs throws are made from only the finest hand selected New Zealand Brushtail Possum skins. All of our possum throws are made to order and accordingly we can accommodate any size required. As a bedspread, over the arm of a sofa or the back of a chair, in the car or on your knee - the choice is yours.
All throws come backed with velvety velour to prevent slipping.
